Lung and Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Campaigns Hit Local Radio Waves

Coastal Cancer Center is teaming up with Easy 105.9 to air a series of cancer awareness public service announcements throughout the month of November.

Dr. Emily Touloukian is leading the awareness campaign, educating local listeners on the signs and symptoms of both lung cancer and pancreatic cancer.

According to the latest statistics from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the Palmetto State. The illness accounts for more victims each year than breast, prostate and pancreatic cancer combined. In her PSA, Dr. Touloukian warns of the common symptoms of lung cancer, which include a persistent cough, shortness of breath and pain while laughing or coughing.

In 2010, SCDHEC reports nearly 700 cases of pancreatic cancer were diagnosed across South Carolina. Doctors say the cancer is difficult to spot, and at the moment, there is not an early detection test available.
