Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of cancer among women in South Carolina. In fact, the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry reported 3,291 new cases of invasive breast cancer were diagnosed in South Carolina last year alone. Dr. Emily Touloukian joins WBTW News 13 Weekend Anchor Lauren Hinnant in a one-on-one interview to discuss why early detection is so important and the symptoms all women should look for.

HOW PREVALENT IS BREAST CANCER AMONG SOUTH CAROLINA WOMEN?
– The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control reports 3,291 new female breast cancer cases were diagnosed and 614 deaths in South Carolina in 2012.
– Approximately 193 new female breast cancer cases were diagnosed in Horry County in 2009, according to the South Carolina Central Cancer Registry.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
– The most common symptom: A new lump or mass in your breast
– Swelling of all or part of a breast (even if no lump is felt)
– Skin irritation or dimpling
– Breast or nipple pain
– Redness or thickening of the nipple of breast skin
– Nipple discharge other than breast milk
SCREENING & EARLY DETECTION RECOMMENDATIONS
– The American Cancer Society recommends women over 40 should have a screening mammogram each year and should do so each year they are in good health.
– The ACS also recommends women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam as part of a periodic health exam at least every 3 years.
